Ricordando un grande biologo militante, Richard Lewontin – Prabir Purkayastha

In giorni in cui siamo costretti ad assistere allo spettacolo bizzarro, perfino esilarante, di dilettanti allo sbaraglio che sdottorano di genetica, biologia, medicina e quant’altro, figurandosi da neo-foucaultiani inconsapevoli a tempo scaduto che tutte le scienze siano totalitariamente sussunte all’onnipotenza del capitale a cui nulla può sfuggire, ci piace ricordare un grande biologo che è stato anche un rigoroso militante anti-razzista, Richard Lewontin. Lo facciamo riprendendo dal sito di Socialist Project un suo ricordo scritto da Prabir Purkayastha. La nostra profonda simpatia per lui, R. Levins e S.J. Gould, tra loro fortemente legati, non ci obbliga, ovviamente, a condividere tutte le singole loro analisi, opinioni, posizioni e battaglie. Ma sono di sicuro tra quelli da cui c’è da imparare, molto.

On July 4, Richard Lewontin, the dialectical biologist, Marxist and activist, died at the age of 92, just three days after the death of his wife of more than 70 years, Mary Jane. He was one of the founders of modern biology who brought together three different disciplines – statistics, molecular biology and evolutionary biology – that mark the discipline today. In doing so, he not only battled crude racism masquerading as science, but also helped shed light on what science really is. In this sense, he belongs to the rare group of scientists who are equally at home in the laboratory and while talking about science and ideology at a philosophical level. Lewontin is a popular exponent of what science is, and more pertinently, what it is not.
